Remembrance Day in Canada
Remembrance Day
There’s an important day on November 11th
which is Armistice Day also known as Remembrance Day. It was
a day I’d never heard of before I came to Canada.
When I was at the mall in
Toronto, the soldier gave me a red flower called poppy to honor the soldiers. This
action brought up my interest to research it.
This is a day to commemorate the
soldiers who died in World War one and it also marked the armistice signed
between the Allies of World War I and Germany at Compiègne, France at 5:45 a.m.
In addition, the use of the poppy on Remembrance Day was inspired by the first
lines of John McCrae’s poem, “In
Flanders Fields”. This makes me think of the soldier at the mall
has given me the bookmark with the poem on it. After reading it, I think it is
a beautiful poem and it touches my heart.
On this day, we went to Cenotaph to honor the soldiers who fought
for the Canadians and sacrificed themselves for their country. Despite the freezing snow, the ceremony went quite well. The ceremony is very solemn. And it makes me know more about Canada.
